The upper receiver was the last piece I need to complete the ZERT lower I was building. I did my research and read really good things about BCM, especially with their upper receivers. I elected to order their 11.5” upper receiver, and they were also running a promotion to receive a BCG free of charge. When I got it in I immediately put it together and put my carry handle on it and took it out to the range. That is where the issues began.
The range started out pretty good, I got about 30-50 rounds down range with no issues what so ever. Then I started to have double feeds with it almost every magazine. Then I notice one time that after the last shot my bolt locked back and I still had a spent round laying in the chamber. I made sure it was a magazine issue by swapping magazines out and I was still having issues with.
When I got back from the range I immediately e-mailed BCM about the issue I was having and I wanted to know if this could possibly be the extractor since the round was still in my chamber after the last round. They claimed that their Extractor Spring was strong enough without the donut to eject the rounds. They claimed it was the Buffer that I had in the rifle. I was pretty sure it was the Extractor Spring and/or the donut on the spring causing the issue.
A couple days later James and I packed up the ZERT AR-Pistol as well as our 2 Spikes Tactical AR-15’s. First thing we did was shoot the ZERT Pistol as is, and immediately we started to have “double”(Not really a double feed, more like a failure to eject and then feeding the next round) feed. I put the Spikes Tactical BCG(Spikes Tactical’s BCG comes with the donut on the Extractor Spring) and I had absolutely zero malfunctions. We then put the BCM BCG back into the pistol and almost immediately it started to malfunction again. The common denominator is the BCG being swapped out.
Now that I knew it was the BCG, I purchased the BCM Extractor Spring kit which comes with the BCM Extractor Spring and donut. Since I have installed that part I have had zero issues with the Pistol. I am kind of upset with BCM on how they handled the situation, but I am also disappointed in a company like BCM that I have to get extra parts to make my Pistol work right. Especially when the upper receiver came as a “kit”. I will probably not look at BCM for future AR builds.
